Key referral triggers 

It’s time to refer your patient to Vision Australia when they are experiencing any sort of vision loss that is not correctible by glasses or medical intervention.  


Changes in vision  

Specific vision referral triggers may include:  

  • the diagnosis of a permanent, non-correctible or progressive eye condition, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, ocular albinism or retinitis pigmentosa 
  • their visual acuity is 6/12 or less (BCUA/BEO) 
  • their visual field is 30 degrees or less with both eyes open (BEO). 

Changes in lifestyle  

Additionally, your patient might mention one or a few of the below concerns:  

  • they are experiencing difficulties in their daily life, such as trouble preparing meals in the kitchen or completing domestic tasks that were once easy. 
  • they are struggling with their personal care, such as bathing, grooming, dressing or doing their hair and makeup. 
  • they are experiencing a loss of independence, and struggle to get out and about on their own. 
  • they are having trouble using their smart phone, tablet or computer.
  • finding or retaining employment has become difficult. 
  • their risk of personal injury has increased, and they now have an increased risk of falls or are experiencing difficulties managing their medication safety. 
  • they have an increased risk of depression, and need emotional support adjusting to their vision loss.
